Roundabout rules made simple

On a roundabout you give way to traffic coming from your right (and to anyone already on it), then join when there's a safe gap.

Which lane and which signal

• Turning left (first exit): approach in the left lane, signal left, stay left.
• Straight ahead: usually the left lane (unless markings/signs say otherwise), no signal on approach, then signal left after you pass the exit before yours.
• Turning right (past 12 o'clock): approach in the right lane, signal right, then signal left as you pass the exit before the one you want.

Always check road markings and signs on approach — they can override the general rule.

Priority and observation

Give way to traffic already on the roundabout and to anyone approaching from your immediate right, unless signs or markings say otherwise. Keep moving if it's clear — don't stop on the roundabout. Watch for cyclists and motorcyclists, who may stay in the left lane even when going all the way round.

Mini-roundabouts

Treat them like normal roundabouts: give way to the right, and go fully around the central marking. They're smaller, so everything happens faster — signal clearly and watch others' intentions.

Multi-lane and spiral roundabouts

Follow the lane markings, which often guide you into the correct lane for your exit. Stay in your lane around the roundabout and don't change lanes unless markings allow.
